Port Richey Info

On the Western side of Florida in Pasco County is the city of Port Richey, Florida. The city was incorporated in 1925 and is named after Aaron McLaughlin Richey originally from St. Joseph Missouri.

Aaron Richey fell in love with the area and settled close to the mouth of the Pithlachascotee river. Realizing that having a boat was the best way to get around the rivers and the Gulf, he bought some property, commissioned a boat, and named the home port “Port Richey”. Aaron Richey also founded the first Post Office in the area and took the role of postmaster.

What attracted people then still attracts them today. The city grew over the years as more people in the Northern United States became aware of the local temperate climate, great fishing in the Gulf of Mexico, excellent golf courses, fine hunting, and relaxing retirement.

While the growth in nearby New Port Richey easily eclipses Port Richey, the city prides itself on remaining a cozy town with a 2010 United States Census population of 2,671 persons, a median age of 52 years old, and a median income of $32,269 dollars.
